ergenis

MSN and RSS feed
Via Emerce: feeds updaten via msn messenger

Finally .. Finally Apple added a RSS feed to their Movie Trailer page
With scrapedfeeds.com I scraped more than 1 year that site for latest movie trailers, but now: yeahhh they have their own movie trailer rss feed
Enjoy!

Vanaf het begin waren de geluiden om GEEN RSS te gaan gebruiken gestoeld op het feit dat als RSS geimplementeerd zou zijn geen bezoek meer (traffic) op de website zou komen;

Buying the Hollywood sign
back in 2001 I had a very long holiday and travelled around the world. One of the spotlights me and my brother visited was the Hollywood sign. Now you can buy a piece of it on Ebay .. No bidders seen
But the history is kewl:
A brief history:
1923 - Film director Mack Sennett and LA Times publisher Harry Chandler build sign
1932 - Actress Peg Entwistle commits suicide by jumping off of the letter H
1944 - Sign and surrounding land are deeded to City of Los Angeles
1949 - Letters "land" are removed and the sign is repainted
1973 - Sign is declared a Cultural Historic Monument
1978 - Celebrities donate funds to rebuild the Hollywood sign
1978 - Original sign taken down and new sign is built
1978 - Hank Berger buys original sign and places it in storage
2001 - Dennis & Erik visited the HOLLYWOOD sign before it was being sold. The fence to the sign was closed however.
2003 - Dan Bliss buys sign and creates AuthenticHollywood business
2005 - YOU buy the HOLLYWOOD sign

scrapedfeeds
scrapedfeeds is down and I am not willing to reactivate it again. Too much issues at the ISP (who is the sponsor of the serverspace). If it comes up again it will come up again but without action of my side.
Only with a better and stable server I will think about it. Domain can be bought, intellectual property is in my head for scraping, so I can be hired.
Maybe you have better luck at the new dutch initiative of MyHeadlines
This time it's o v e r.

scrapedfeeds
Scrapedfeeds is weer 's down.

Ilse's blogsearch & rss feeds

Ilse zoekt RSS & Atom feeds

Looking forward to the year 2005
I will stop maintaining scrapedfeeds.com
Reasons? Several.
It's time I do not have anymore to maintain the site and the feeds. Next to that a lot of people were using it but appreciation was very little to find. Another big reason is that development of the engine of scrapedfeeds.com 'MyHeadlines' is slowly evaluating but not the way I want it (no offence to Mike), but I want to have OPML, and other stuff what is not available or not available in the nearby future.
So Scrapedfeeds.com is available for rent / buy
I also want to thank 1-eurohost for dontating the webspace and bandwidth. 01-01-2005 I will shut down the service

Too many idea's I have but right now no support for rss 2.0 and enclosures within the scraper through myheadlines. Waiting for Mike ;-)
Otherwise I have to personalise the application myself or with the help of someone who can do PHP, MYSQL and RSS 2.0 ;-)

Unique new service: Scrapedfeeds is scraping the Unique news service of NU.NL/Telex
Last week ilse Media announced that they have a unique new service: a newsarticle service. 7 categories of news from different sources at 1 page
WEEEHOOOIEEE that's unique.. <NOT> That is the same as newsisfree, loglezer and scrapedfeeds.com are doing for month's if not years already.
Bummer .. that new unique service lacks RSS .. (I wonder how they retrieve the feeds)
Therefore: scrapedfeeds is scraping the unique Nu.nl Telex pages into RSS .. that's what I call: unique .... ';-)

rss 2.0 template
Just added a rss2.0 template This template should be 'better' than the previous rss 2.0 version I have.
According to the author: The big one is replacing namespace elements with core elements from RSS 2.0, which I believe is a better practice for simple syndication.
But it does not validate

About ANP RSS FEEDS
Halim was scraping ANP feeds for his own site. I found the feeds some weeks ago through syndicatie.nl and was wondering how Halim was able to scrape the feeds offering the contents as his own contents (as in: having a subscription from the database of ANP). It was really looking good, but hyperlinks: no, not to the real source the feed items were taken from. Now: ANP has summoned him to stop offering the feeds.
I know that ANP is visiting my site once in the while (statics do show this). I also do offer ANP RSS feeds but the difference between Halims feed and mine is that I will forward to reader to the website the feed was taken from.
Scrapedfeeds is offering RSS feeds from @ home, showing only the 'headline' without the contents of the article: this is causing the reader to click and visit the original website. So in that situation my feeds are 'equal' to the kranten.com ruling (dutch) some years ago.
I wrote Halim some weeks that his service could give problems. Within 3 weeks the game was over and the service was closed down sooner than expected. (a disclaimer is not enough). The news articles from ANP displayed through @home and scraped by scrapedfeeds.com you can find here

PERSBERICHT SCRAPEDFEEDS.COM
Hey .. Hier gevonden ..
-------------------------------------------
PERSBERICHT SCRAPEDFEEDS.COM
------------------------------------------
uw favoriete websites binnen.
Vervolgens bepaalt u zelf welke artikelen u wilt lezen.

KNMI ligt plat, Meteoconsult zuigt.

Scrapedfeeds: ANP Feeds (NEW!!)

Damn: ANP / Novum Feeds defect
Damn.

powered by myheadlines.

Not to forget the dutch gossip pages .. Showbizz .. & of course sterrenbeurs nieuws is scraped again
Note: TV Gids.nl is NOT being scraped yet. This will have to wait till there is a new version of Myheadlines, this due to some strange updates in the Guide

P Log-readers
Just wondering when Adam will annouce the availability of the Personal Log Readers he would offer for free to the weblog community ...
his own loglezer (collection of rss feeds at a webpage) should have much more features. Myheadlines (the one I am using) is offering: XML-RPC (remote publishing to your weblog, sending headlines per e-mail etc) The logreader of Adam is a plain simple setup ;-) with lack of features.
Another alternative for a personal log-reader is bloglines

Rss feeds @ BNN.weblog
1. you have to select: do you want that your posts can be used by someone else to get the XML icon (so have a hyperlink to the RSS feed).
bug / security issue:
Even when you do not select this option you can have the RSS feed by adding the ?view=rss at the end of the blog-URL. That's bad.
The explanation of BNN by explaining the XML icon:
With XML someone can use your message at his/her own site. XML is just a kind of code. And that's it.

RSS Scraped Power: Jobs in your feedreader!

First I tried Jobnews, but I needed cookie support. This is not supported in Myheadlines yet. So it's unscrapable.

Popular Internet Images
I'm scraping a few Yahoo sites with: most e-mailed, most popular, ratings, AFP photos. With these scrapes you get a nice RSS feed.
I was irritated about the scrape(s) cause I did not scrape the description.
From today: the popular internet images do have the description also
If you have a site with 'popular' images I can check if I can scrape it for you.

prophecy: RSS in Holland
RSS is getting mainstream. More and more site do implement RSS for syndication usage.
I predict that in the next few months more and more NEWS sites will implement the feeds, so that there is no need for scraping anymore
If not: Dutch News sites will be not interesting as news media anymore (were they?)
I've tracked a number of self-scraped sites right now and 90% of the news here is from ANP or NOVUM and they copy it all.
It's preferred that all the Local NewsPapers with the vignette server do add news. Right now I'm scraping some local stuff and it's working. So why not use it? I see the headline; an excerpt and I visit the site and see your advertisements. Kewl not?
Planet Multimedia, Quotenet, All Wegener Newspapers and of course Webwereld (yes you have RSS), but make it public, not only the trillian feed !:
For all: please add RSS to your sites

How to scrape with MyHeadlines
Request from a reader: how to scrape with myheadlines?
Myheadlines has an own engine to scrape websites for a RSS/XML feed
How does this work?. Myheadlines does have a tutorial and when you understand this tutorial you can create scraped RSS feeds.
To explain scraping a little I will use as example an feed with almost all options available.
How to scrape GOOGLE WORLD News
Find the URL: (the less overhead the better so I use the lite version of the page).
http://news.google.nl/news/en/us/mainlite.html
{dump}<title>{site_name}</title>
This line is most of the time my 'test' line. If this does function (showing the title within Myheadlines, I know I can probably scrape the page)
{dump}<a name=WORLD>
I'm searching for a name=WORLD> this line is unique
After this line the scraper should find the link, title and/or description
{dump}<a class=y href="{link_1}">{title_1}</a>
Here I define where the scraper should use the link and title feature
{dump}</b><br>{desc_1}<br>
And here the description.
So the example for a correct scraped Google News Feed would be:
{dump}<title>{site_name}</title>

{dump}<a class=y href="{link_1}">{title_1}</a>
{dump}<<br>{desc_1}
{dump}<a class=y href="{link_2}">{title_2}</a>
{dump}</b><br>{desc_2}<br>
Please be noticed that you NEED to add {dump} at the start of a new line
Output:
Sharon won't tolerate roadmap violations

Is RSS becoming popular?
More and more sites here in Holland & Belgium do implement the RSS / XML button/feed. More and more Weblogs & sites do see the 'light' of syndication.
Perfect. After months of writing, talking about it at my website I see people do actually use it and implement it.
The argument; Why should I? has been changed into: I do not want to be the latest one implementing it into my site. Everyone has the XML button.
And for those sites without RSS feeds: I'm scraping !

it's all in the name
This morning I read the essay from Adam about RSS in the Lowlands
Adam is pointing to his own aggegrator which he wants to make public (I see his newsbin hitting my local server every hour). His aggegrator is not different than the 'myheadlines' feature I have running at my local server.
But it's all in the name. I'm Dennis, he is AC .. I'm attracting a different kind of people to my weblog and it seems they do not need feeds for online reading.
Only a few people request some feeds. And those feeds I scrape. (building rss/xml feed from a normal webpage if rss/xml does not exist at that page).
There have been a number of people explaining (dutch language) RSS and syndication. [example 1] & [example 2]
The question is: is there need for online aggegrators if there are numerous offline aggegrators available?
from my point of view: within the dutch weblog community there seems only little interest in syndication. So I will look with interest to his demonstration to see if his explanation will be sufficient to attract more people to aggegrators.
And maybe than more people will see and enjoy the power of reading news online.

To be funky or not
Damn.. I'm following the RSS story for a long long time...
First there was the RSS 0.91, than RSS 0.92 than RSS 1.0 which can be called RDF than RSS 2.0. (can you follow??) now it's all about: 'Funky RSS feeds'
(I even do not try to give you some permalinks as we have disputes about using LINKS and GUIDS ..) all need to be validated ..
Pffff
I've several 'syndicated' feeds available (but no 0.91 & 0.92 anymore), mmm and I see a funky rss 2.0 feed ;-) [1], [2], [3] [4] and for today I seem to have a new not funkey feed created..

okay I can created 3 feeds out of one html page (thanks Mike) but ..

I have selected 4 categories to start with: 'voorpagina', 'algemeen', 'economie' & Internet to track and trace the forthcomming days to see if the scraper does it's job.
More categories will be added if it keeps working ;-)
Update: feeds do work but the hyperlink does not. A problem with the slashes ..
:-((
Maybe I need a fix within the scraper.

Update: Nu.nl news
Here in Holland the dutch press / news center was not happy with the 'deeplink' newsticker which was available through nu.nl
Right now they have disabled the ANP (C) news messages in the 'News Feeds'
I'll try to scrape the site myself so that all items will be available again.
(he he he) :-)

MyHeadlines
Upgraded myheadlines. Not much changed what you can see.
One option I requested (out of many) has been implemented;
Fixed the backend RSS for scraped feeds, now it will service the request BEFORE attempting to update the cache. External news readers will not see a delay in the feed.
I know some people are using my scraped news (kewl!!)

Algemeen Dagblad.nl
Another newspaper scraped and given it a RSS 0.91 URL ..
YEAH! Syndication ! (sort of)
I've scraped AD.nl, but not really confident if I have all items correctly.
I think the 2 items under the 'head-item' will go to the right-window part after an update, so that they will be updated later .. If not: I'll change it.
